Mafia and Racket in the Old TestamentMafia and racket never start from nothing: "When goods increase, they are increased that eat them" (The Bible, Old Testament, Book of Ecclesiastes, chapter 5, verse 11). And these tangibles, the Word of God warns, create problems to the transgressors of the Law: "He swallows riches, but vomits it; God shall cast them out of his belly" (The Bible, Old Testament, Job, chapter 20, verse 15). And to law-abiding citizens: "Do not labor to be rich; cease from your own understanding. Will your eyes fly on it? And it is gone! For surely it makes wings for itself; it flies into the heavens like an eagle" (The Bible, Old Testament, Proverbs, chapter 23, verses 4-5). That's why wise people always sought the golden middle: "...Give me neither poverty or riches; tear for me my portion of bread, lest I be full and deceive, and say, Who is the LORD? Or lest I be poor, and steal, and violate the name of my God" (The Bible, Old Testament, Proverbs, chapter 30, verses 8-9). But almost two thousand years ago Jesus Christ - the Son of God - offered an even better way: "Do not lay up treasures on earth for yourselves, where moth and rust corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal. But lay up treasures in Heaven for yourselves, where neither moth nor rust corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also" (The Bible, New Testament, Gospel of Matthew, chapter 6, verses 19-21).
